Seeing as I have been hired to design advertisements and other graphics for Ohana Software. I decided that I should probably figure out this whole genealogy thing after all. So, as I set out on my journey of discovery I have a few goals in mind. First, to start finding some of my ancestors so I can take their names to the temple. This leads me to my second purpose for venturing into the world of genealogy. I would like to figure out a way to help those who, like myself, have continually told themselves that they would start doing genealogy “this week”, but end up looking back a year later and wondering why they never got started. It seems that when I have time, I never think I have “enough” time to get anywhere.
I decided to take the leap and start today. I've been working on graphics all week and decided this might be a good “I need a break” activity.
Todays Goal: Get a Preliminary file.
Option 1: Call up a relative that is doing genealogy and get their PAF/GEDCOM file. (preferred)
Option 2:
Go to OhanaSoftware.com and download “Get My Ancestors”- free utility that downloads your tree from new.FamilySearch.org
Use it to get 6 generations and save the file.
Considering the download of my file took a little longer than I was hoping, I had to call it a day. I don't feel all that accomplished, but at least it is a start.
My original plan was to only spend 20 minutes doing genealogy every week, but since my first endeavor took closer to 30 minutes, I guess I'll spend 20-30 minutes each time.
With that said, I hope that my experiences will help all of you who can't get past that initial, “yeah, I'd love to do genealogy.” thought.
